When sheer curtains are drawn open, the fabric needs to move somewhere along the track. It can stack to the left, to the right, or split in the middle for a center-opening look. In some cases, curtains are free-flow, meaning they can move anywhere along the track. The fabric that gathers at the side (or sides) of the window when open is called the curtain stackback — and it's one of the most overlooked aspects of curtain planning.
As a general rule, around 30% of the curtain track length will be taken up by stackback. For center-opening curtains, this is split equally between the left and right. Where possible, we recommend extending curtain tracks wall-to-wall, so the stackback can rest neatly against the wall, keeping the window completely clear.
